A Chinese homeless man  has undergone surgery for a tumor the size of a football removed from his face.

Chen Jianguo, 37, had been living with disfigurement for nearly 20 years until the doctors gave him a new lease of life.

The tumor, which was so great that affected his eye sight and ability to eat, first appeared on his face in 1995 and continued to grow.

At its largest the face completely disfigured on the right hand side, eyes and nose, and almost completely obscured his mouth.

Since the remarkable treatment his face returned to its normal size, despite his bruised right eye and a little sagging skin around the chin.

Not wanting to burden his family of Mr. Jianguo left his home in Liandu, Zhaoquing in 1998 and was forced to live on the streets.

Doctors performed surgery pioneer in dental Guanghua Hospital in Guangzhou.

Before the operation - which led to serious risks - Mr. Jianguo said he would donate his organs if he died during surgery.

However, he said if he survived was due to go "straight home."

He told the press in May last year: ‘I will receive the operation, even if the risk of it going wrong is large.

'If successful, the first thing I'm going to do is go home. If not, I'm glad to donate my organs to anyone who needs them
