A Tibetan protester was treated for severe burns after setting himself on fire in a demonstration before the visit of Chinese President to India.

The protester ran up to 50m through New Delhi, now engulfed in flames as hundreds demonstrated against Chinese rule over Tibet.

Jamphel Yeshi performed self-immolation as he ran near the speakers at a rally near the Parliament of India in the capital.

Tibet suffered burns on 98 percent of his body and its condition at the hospital was described as critical today.

He was on fire perhaps less than two minutes, but some of her clothes had disintegrated and his skin was mottled black, burnt patches for the time was taken to a hospital.

Yeshi, 27, fled Tibet in 2006 and had been living in New Delhi for the past two years, activists said.

He collapsed after about 50 meters, while fellow protesters beat the flames with Tibetan flags they carried.

Yeshi was later treated for serious burns in a hopital in New Delhi, an organizer of Tibet, he said.

He made the dramatic protest as Chinese President Hu Jintao prepared to go to India later this week for a summit.

More than 600 demonstrators, carrying placards and banners, marched through New Delhi to a central square, near the Parliament of India to hold a protest meeting.

Some posters have been saying 'Tibet is burning "and" Tibet is not part of China. "

At the headquarters of a protest by a large poster with the face of Mr Hu Jintao with a bloody palm print on it, said: "Hu Jin Tao is not welcome" at the top.

The speakers addressed the crowd, the protester set himself on fire and ran by.

After witnessing the man set himself on fire, a spectator, Tenzin Dorjee, said: "This is what China faces unless they give freedom to Tibet."

At least 30 people in Tibet have been set on fire last year in protest against Chinese rule in their homeland.

The Dalai Lama has accused China of ruthless politics "for self-immolation. China accuses Dalai Lama of inciting riots.

China says Tibet has always been part of its territory. Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent for centuries.
