Elephant protects calf from the hyenas

0

This is the dramatic moment a protective mother elephant desperately fought a fearsome pack of hyenas trying to attack her calf.

The struggle for life and death began as mammals like the dog lunged at the baby elephant off guard when he separated from his mother.

Six of the hyenas took to the back of the calf in an attempt to overthrow it, which led to angry mother to take action.

She stampeded towards the fierce creatures with such force that left several uprooted trees in its wake.

The great elephant lying at her feet and swung her trunk in the package, which quickly dispersed.

She then returned to her calf, which had its tail bitten during the meeting, but appeared otherwise unharmed.

The brutal encounter was witnessed by a group of stunned tourists who were ready for the mother to victory.

Guide James Weis, eye tour of the company in Africa, was leading the group of visitors at Mount Linyanto in Botswana at the time.

James, 50, of Chicago, said: "We were in three vehicles when we heard the cries of an elephant.

"We went to investigate and found a small group of two large female elephants and two calves.

"A group of about 18 hyenas were trying to make inroads in the calf

"They waited until the baby comes into a clearing and then two or three pounced on him.

"When the mother expelled from the larger herd tried to attack the calf. It was not the only one of more than 10 seconds when the mother returned and was even more annoying.

"They were playing a dangerous game because there was a hyena which got in the way of and had been thrown through in the air like a ball.

"She charged after the package and was knocking down trees like toothpicks and hyenas fled and dispersed in a cloud of dust raised by the mother.

'The baby had its tail bitten, but it was fine. It is quite common to see elephants in Africa without a tail.

"It was a spectacular thing to see."
