Bereaved husband, 78, jumps to 12 storeys to his death from Manhattan apartment just hours before the funeral of his wife

A pensioner who committed suicide with a broken heart just hours before the funeral of his wife.

Miguel Melendez, in a suit he was planning at the funeral of Mrs. Dominga dressed, jumped from his 12-story window because he could not bare to live without her.

The couple shared an apartment on the Lower East Side, New York, and have been married for more than 40 years.






Neighbours said the death of Mrs. Melendez was too much for the 78-year-old to handle and, unfortunately, he decided he no longer wanted to live.

One of them, said Hector Sanchez, he had known the family all his life, and told the New York Post: '. I do not think he could handle it more '

Mrs. Melendez to be, 76, died after a long battle with diabetes on Monday last week and was due to the RG Ortiz Funeral Home, First Avenue, buried on Friday.

Witnesses said the couple's devastated son Michael visited the scene of the incident shortly thereafter.

"Now he has to bury both of his parents," said a family friend, who asked not to be named.

'They were together for so long, I guess he couldn't take it.'

A spokesman confirmed the funeral home the funeral was canceled, and said it was likely the couple would be laid to rest next week.

The police confirmed that it has been reported on the scene shortly after a man who had been called to the building jumped to around 9.45.

The spokesman added that she did not suspect foul play.
